Speech Delay vs. Autism: Understanding the Difference

Speech delay alone does not mean your child has autism. Here's how specialists tell the difference.

Speech Delay Only Common

  • Tries to communicate with gestures or pointing
  • Makes consistent eye contact
  • Responds to their name
  • Shows interest in playing with others
  • Uses facial expressions and social cues

Autism with Speech Delay Evaluation Recommended

  • Limited or inconsistent eye contact
  • Does not respond consistently to their name
  • Limited pointing or showing objects to share
  • Reduced interest in social interaction
  • Repetitive behaviors or intense, narrow interests

Early Signs to Watch For (12–24 Months)

Pediatricians recommend an evaluation if your child shows any of these signs.

When Speech Therapy Alone May Not Be Enough

Speech therapy addresses communication skills. But when speech delay is related to autism, the underlying developmental differences require a different approach.

If your child's speech delay is caused by autism, speech therapy alone may not address challenges with social interaction, behavior, and adaptive skills. In these cases, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy is the evidence-based treatment recommended by the U.S. Surgeon General and the American Psychological Association.

ABA therapy helps children develop communication, social skills, and independence through structured, play-based learning — and it's covered by most private insurance plans.

Important: ABA Centers of America specializes in autism evaluation and ABA therapy. We do not provide speech therapy services. If an evaluation determines your child does not have autism, we can help connect you with the appropriate speech-language resources.

Questions Parents Ask

Does speech delay mean my child has autism?
Not necessarily. Speech delay is common and has many causes. However, when speech delay occurs alongside reduced social interaction, limited eye contact, or repetitive behaviors, it may be an early sign of autism. A professional evaluation is the only way to know for certain.
What's the difference between speech therapy and ABA therapy?
Speech therapy focuses on communication and language skills. ABA therapy is a comprehensive approach that addresses communication, social skills, behavior, and daily living skills for children with autism. When speech delay is caused by autism, ABA therapy treats the underlying condition while also improving communication.
At what age should I be concerned about speech delay?
Pediatricians recommend concern if a child does not say single words by 16 months or does not combine two words by 24 months. If these milestones are missed alongside limited eye contact or social engagement, an evaluation is strongly recommended.
Do you offer speech therapy?
No. ABA Centers of America specializes in autism diagnosis and ABA therapy. If your child's evaluation shows speech delay without autism, we will help connect you with qualified speech-language pathologists in your area.
Is an autism evaluation covered by insurance?
Yes. Most major private insurance plans cover autism evaluations and ABA therapy. Our team will verify your coverage before your first appointment at no cost to you.
How soon can we be seen?
We do not have waitlists. Most families are scheduled for an evaluation within the same week of calling. We have 11 locations across New Hampshire and Massachusetts, plus in-home therapy options.
