Speech Delay vs. Autism: Understanding the Difference

Speech delay alone does not mean your child has autism. Here's how specialists tell the difference.

Speech Delay Only Common

  • Tries to communicate with gestures or pointing
  • Makes consistent eye contact
  • Responds to their name
  • Shows interest in playing with others
  • Uses facial expressions and social cues

Autism with Speech Delay Evaluation Recommended

  • Limited or inconsistent eye contact
  • Does not respond consistently to their name
  • Limited pointing or showing objects to share
  • Reduced interest in social interaction
  • Repetitive behaviors or intense, narrow interests

When Speech Therapy Alone May Not Be Enough

Speech therapy addresses communication skills. But when speech delay is related to autism, the underlying developmental differences require a different approach.

If your child’s speech delay is caused by autism, speech therapy alone may not address challenges with social interaction, behavior, and adaptive skills. In these cases, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy is the evidence-based treatment recommended by the U.S. Surgeon General and the American Psychological Association.

ABA therapy helps children develop communication, social skills, and independence through structured, play-based learning — and it’s covered by most private insurance plans.

Important: ABA Centers of America specializes in autism evaluation and ABA therapy. We do not provide speech therapy services. If an evaluation determines your child does not have autism, we can help connect you with the appropriate speech-language resources.
